Chapter Four — Thursday, 9:40 p.m.

The last card in the box is different from all the others.

I find it on Thursday night, at home. I've started bringing the shoebox back and forth in a canvas grocery bag, which I'm aware is the kind of thing a man does right before he becomes a story somebody tells about him. Jack watches me set it on the kitchen counter every night with the expression of a dog who has seen this before, from the other box, and didn't care for it then either.
